Dr. W. Steve Albrecht is a highly respected professor of accounting, certified public accountant, certified internal auditor, certified fraud examiner, and former president of the American Accounting Association (AAA). He has testified as an expert witness in almost 40 major criminal fraud cases, served on several boards of directors for both publicly and privately held companies, and received numerous awards for his work in every aspect of his career, including teaching, professional accounting, and fraud examination. Academic Expertise
Dr. Albrecht received his PhD in accounting and MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, following which he taught at Stanford and the University of Illinois before joining the faculty at Brigham Young University (BYU). There he became the head of BYU’s accounting program and eventually the associate dean of BYU’s Marriott School of Business, serving for nearly a decade in each position. Dr. Albrecht’s research has spanned auditing, fraud examination, and corporate governance, resulting in over 100 academic and professional articles and 20 books.
In addition to his research, Dr. Albrecht has been recognized time after time for his exceptional teaching. He has been awarded BYU’s highest faculty honor—the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award—and several more awards from BYU, Stanford, the University of Illinois, and a number of accounting associations. These awards include being named educator of the year by the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, the Utah Association of CPAs, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Dr. Albrecht has also served in leadership positions on many education-focused organizations, such as Beta Alpha Psi and the Accounting Accreditation Committee for the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and he even represented the US on the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) Education Committee.
Professional Expertise
As if Dr. Albrecht’s academic accomplishments aren’t already impressive enough, he also has extensive expertise in the professional world. Dr. Albrecht has applied his accounting expertise to the realm of fraud examination and litigation support, serving as an expert witness in almost 40 high-profile fraud cases. Expert witnesses are professionals who are exceptional in their field and whose testimonies will provide valuable insight into related aspects of a case—and Dr Albrecht’s testimony played a key role in the Enron, Adelphia, and Tyco cases, to name a few. But Dr. Albrecht’s work with fraud examination has extended beyond the courtroom as well. He has worked extensively in the practical world of fraud examination, serving as a member of the board of regents for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and receiving a number of awards from that organization, including Educator of the Year, the Hall of Fame Award, and the Cressey Award for “a lifetime of achievement in fraud detection and deterrence.”
Dr. Albrecht’s professional achievements don’t end with fraud examination, however. He has also had a rich career in the business world, performing in-house training and consulting and eventually serving on the boards of directors for a number of publicly and privately held companies. These companies have ranged from software, technology, and communications media industries, to corporate benefits package management and financial industries, to an airline, a solar power company, and a home fitness equipment company.
